FIC#028: Story of Rosanna and Her Family
I once worked at a securities company in Mainland China, living a life of comfort and affluence. During a trip to Hong Kong, I met my ex-husband and eventually married him. Little did I know he had a pathological gambling problem. To protect our family, I used all my savings to pay off his gambling debts. Despite his promises to change when our daughter and son were born, he sold off all our valuable possessions.
I then moved into a subdivided flat, working three jobs a day, leaving myself physically and mentally exhausted. The emotional trauma left by my ex-husband, compounded by the pandemic, my son’s ADHD, and lack of community support, led to my development of schizophrenia and suicidal thoughts.
I am grateful to ChickenSoup Foundation for giving me hope again. My daughter learned to take care of her brother and now interacts with me as a friend. Despite his dyslexia, my son has made significant strides in self-care.
I am now helping to manage the ChickenSoup Clubhouse and lead “Healthy Eating Club” (one of the self help groups) encouraging healthy eating and organizing community events in Kowloon City District. I have shared my experiences on RTHK HOY TV and HK01.
I am now in a state of ‘Proud’. I aspire to return to a life of affluence. My daughter dreams of being accepted into a performing arts academy to achieve her dream of dancing and performing.
“I look after my two children on my own since I gave birth to them. My daughter is now 11 years old, and my son is three years old! My kids have transformed from not knowing anything to now my son can eat on his own. There are many ups and downs and despite my kids misbehave sometimes, I am happy to be able to witness their growth.”
“I used to think my life was full of twists and turns and I had trouble sleeping every night. I was worried about my son’s growth and the bad influences that my daughter might face. I contemplated my failed marriage. Now that school has started, I take things easy and try not to worry too much…
Our lives might seem dull but at least I’m able to sleep every night and I truly feel blessed. I’m going to take a beauty and skin care course. It’s rare that I get to relax while doing something I like.”
Rosanna’s mom was recently interviewed by HOY TV to share what it was like to adapt to changes due to COVID as a caregiver and her kids’ struggles following the resumption of full-day classes.
