Dancing Out Loud

FIC#022: Story of Jessica and Her Family

Trauma

I used to own two barbershops in mainland China and have over ten years of hair cutting experience. In 2011, I moved to Hong Kong after marrying my ex-husband, whom I met through my work. However, due to language and cultural barriers, I became unemployed. My daughter was born with multiple learning disabilities, which led my ex-husband to divorce. Faced with these challenges, I fell into depression and felt hopeless.

Changes

Fortunately, I encountered ‘Chicken Soup foundation’, which gave my daughter and me the courage to start anew. I continued my study journey, earning various professional qualifications and even winning international awards, becoming an internationally recognized professional stylist. At the same time, I contribute to the community by providing free haircut and makeup services. My daughter also volunteers with me, showing significant improvement in her social skills.

Become a 'Proud' family

I offer volunteer makeup and haircut services at “Self-Love Society,” sharing my experiences of self-love and resilience during family events. I have shared my story on Hong Kong Radio’s “Night Mama’s Heart-to-Heart,” Hong Kong Economic Times, Peninsula TV’s AL JAZEERA, and on YouTube’s Coffee.

I am at the state of ‘Proud’ and found my own value. Whether in work, social life, volunteerism, or my daughter’s life, I lead a colorful and fulfilling life. I am grateful to be part of the Chicken Soup family, which serves as a lifelong example for me.
