Grow Bold But Not Old

FIC#004: Story of Grandma and Her Family

trauma

In 2012, my daughter and son-in-law were sentenced to prison for 10-15 years due to a moment of greed, and I took on a heavy burden of caring for my three grandchildren. At that time, they were only 3, 7, and 8 years old, and we all squeezed into a two-bedroom public housing unit, and our living conditions was very impoverished.

One of my grandsons has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and speech difficulties, while another has learning disabilities. Despite suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and my husband being plagued by liver disease, I tirelessly sought for social welfare resources for my grandchildren. I didn’t care if people called me a professional beneficiary; I just wanted to ensure they do not end up in foster care.

Changes

In 2018, during the most challenging times, I was fortunate that ‘Chickensoup’ offer a helping hand. They not only provided tutoring for my grandchildren but also offered comprehensive support and arranged treatment for me, bringing me comfort amid adversity.

By the end of 2023, just a week after my husband passed away, my daughter was released from prison. She has turned her life around and found stable employment.

Become a 'hopeful' family

My three grandchildren have also grown healthily and are gradually becoming independent. In 2025, we moved from a two-bedroom unit to a five-bedroom public housing apartment. After enduring these difficult years, we finally see the light of hope, and I can now enjoy my later years in peace.
