FIC#017: Zhen’s family

Trauma

In 2019, my husband passed away from cancer. My daughter wrote a heartfelt letter to the founder of “Soul Soup,” asking for help with his medical expenses, but unfortunately, he ultimately succumbed to the illness. Because I only had a two-way permit, I couldn’t find work in Hong Kong. I had serious mental health issues during this time.

The three of us could only rely on a meager social welfare allowance to get by, living in a rooftop flat on the ninth floor, exposed to the sun and rain, leading a very impoverished life. The immense pressure of our situation caused me to develop severe mental health problems. My children also experienced emotional issues due to their father’s passing.

After entering high school, my daughter participated in various activities to increase her chances of getting into university, one of them was a STEM program. This also enhanced her interest in mechanical engineering.

I am grateful that I receive support from “ChickenSoup” and the generous donor, Noel, in 2025. Nuveen Invest in the Future sponsored my daughter’s four-year university scholarship, allowing her to continue pursuing her goals. She hopes to attend her dream university and study mechanical engineering.
